This is the first of the expression goals. At this point, students should feel comfortable with the goal process and more competent in their skills. In these units, the focus is on students expressing themselves, so research is replaced by planning.

Make sure to insist on using the goal sentence prompt exactly as it is in this first goal.
"I will express that ________ in 7 days."
By including the word "that" in the goal sentence, students were more successful in writing these types of goals. Without it, many struggled to understand how to write what they wanted to express.
For example:
"I will express my family in 7 days."
"I will express that my family is important to me in 7 days."
The first goal sentence is both too simplistic and grammatically incorrect, but many of my students initially wrote goals like this. When I included "that" in the goal sentence, it suddenly clicked for them.

On the second day of planning, students tend to want to create just two more thumbnails and then move on. I typically tell them they need to spend a whole class period on this and draw as many thumbnail sketches as they can.
