Skill Building - Choice
After practicing the research process with shading and color theory, students are then expected to research a skill they want to learn. There are a few notable differences in this unit compared to the prescribed skill units.Â
The Talent and Practice lesson is only used on the first skill building unit.Â
There is no quiz lesson. Whatever they learn (or don't learn) about their chosen skill is fine. If they learned enough to use the skill, then I'm satisfied by that. If not, they'll naturally have to go back to their resources to get more information. I don't have to force it. Though I may recommend it if I feel it will help.Â
"Exploring Known Skills" and "Exploring New Skills" are added to the beginning of the first choice skill building unit, but eliminated from future units. These get students thinking of what they may want to continue learning about and expose them to skills they aren't familiar with.Â
I removed the "Reflect on Skill Building" lesson for the sake of time. It felt important early on to make it clear to them that if they practice, they will improve. Once the point is made, the time spent on this reflection is less valuable.Â
After they practice their skill they then use it to create an artwork.Â

In this lesson, students find resources. The only condition for using a resource in this lesson is that it has a definition of shading on it. They'll assess the quality of the resources they found in the next lesson. The choice version of this lesson reviews what was taught in the shading version.

Many students did not find step-by-step instructions to practice when expected, but I wasn't always able to tell from their post screenshot. I needed to ensure they all had one before moving on to practice, so I separated that expectation. In Canvas, students cannot move past this assignment until they've earned a 100.Â
