This unit explores students's current understanding of art and provides opportunities for discussion of various opinions. Students will create a drawing that teaches them some basic typography skills and will provide you with an opportunity to gain further insight into their current abilities and interests. The unit culminates in a definition of art that will serve as a benchmark for the rest of the course.

This lesson is designed, as are all Plug and Play lessons, to be student-paced. In general, I advocate against whole-class instruction as you cannot guarantee all students will be present and willing to participate on any given day. That being said, this lesson is a great opportunity for discussion. You may want to convert the handout into a Kahoot poll and guide the students as they participate and discuss their ideas before writing their own thoughts on the handout. The lesson makes no mention of this because it needs to be designed for students who need to complete the lesson later.

I always have students turn in digital documents as PDF's because other formats can cause issues with my default Google account when I grade on the Canvas app. PDF's will show up regardless of what account I'm logged into. It also saves a version of the document within Canvas, so if something happens to the document in Google, it can be downloaded from Canvas.
This lesson uses a Padlet for students to collaboratively add content to lists. You'll need to create your own free Padlet account and create this resource for your students. I had never used it before and found it to be very intuitive. I've added slides at the end of the lesson with info on how to set this up.
